Hello, I own a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix. Awhile back, I got
a check engine light, a code reader brought up a P1404 fault code. When I contacted a Pontiac dealer, they told me that it was the egr valve stuck in the closed position, I bought a new one (aftermarket) and installed it, I then had the code cleared out. After a few miles, the check engine light came back on, checking the codes brought up the P1404-again. My question is if it isn't the valve since it is new, what would be the most likely cause of the fault code coming back? In the Grand Prix, there is only the valve and the tube running from the exhaust manifold and the electrical connection to the valve so it would appear that the only other problem could be the tubing being clogged unless there is a problem inside the intake manifold. Also, I saw on your code section, the info on egr valves for Ford which apparently uses vacuum lines to activate the egr. So how do I equate that to the single electrical connection on my egr. Also when I contacted a pontiac dealership, the service manager told me that my problem was attributed to my using an aftermarket valve, could this be true or could he just be trying to sell me a part from there. Also the fuel economy is now normal for the vehicle rating.

Hello eagle777,
I honestly wouldn't think this fault is caused by an aftermarket egr valve. I did a little research and found a Technical Service Bulletin for this specific concern. I would recommend calling back a Pontiac dealer and having them run your car for TSB 01-06-04-018A which was issued in September of 2002. The TSB is in regards to the check engine light coming on and storing a P1404 Diagnostic Trouble Code. The EGR valve pintle position voltage may not correlate to the anticipated PCM calibration values. To fix this concern the technician will need to reprogram the computer with an updated software version. I would say this is the most likely cause of your concern and is a known issue with a number of 2001 Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Buick and Pontiac vehicles including the Grand Prix. I hope this was helpful!
